God prepares Solomon for leadership

Kings 3
Solomon marries pagan (vs 1)
Israelites make sacrifices on high places (vs 2)
The tabernacle still exist
Solomon has not built the temple yet
Solomon's devotion to Lord (vs 3-15)
Solomon loves Lord
Except he makes sacrifices on high places
In this case it was a Great High Place in
Gideon
God appears to Solomon in a dream
God ask what Solomon wants
Solomon praises God for how he treated
his father
Solomon acknowledges his weakness
Solomon's request: understanding and
discernment of good and evil
God is impressed with his request
God grants his request
God gives him a bonus, riches and honor,
because of his request
God's promise to Solomon
Condition - follow in his father's
footsteps
reward - long life
After dream - Solomon returns to Jerusalem
to make offerings
Makes Lordship decision
offerings - burnt, peace, feast
for servants
Dispute between two women (vs 16-25)
Background of dispute
Two women live together in a house
No one else lives there
Both birth a male child
One lays on top of child during night
and kills it
Woman with dead child swaps her child
with woman whose child is alive
Woman's son who was alive accuses the
other of the swap
Solomon repeats the accusation back to them
Solomon's solution - divide the live child
Solomon waits for the response
The women whose child was alive tells Solomon to give
